Help me answer some of these questions: 1) When did a our President who has a strong connection with his white mother and white grand parents to have a deep seeded hatred for whites? 2) How does the President's (who graduated from an Ivy university and taught law school classes) conversation about education to our kids become a rallying cry against possible Nazi brainwashing from WWII??? 3) Why do people not pay attention to the fact that the same people who have these ads about 'Setting up healthcare the right way' are the same special interest groups who want the current system to remain? 4) When are citizens going to spend more time reading legislation instead of embarrassing themselves by screaming about inaccurate information and assumptions they've heard from opinionated broadcasters and commercials? With praise and thanksgiving they sang to the LORD: “He is good; his love toward Israel endures forever.” And all the people gave a great shout of praise to the LORD, because the foundation of the house of the LORD was laid. Ezra 3:11 My youngest turned twenty-one this week. Now he’s old enough to drink, vote, go to war, buy tobacco products, rent an apartment, open a bank account, and serve on a jury. (He still can’t rent a car.) He’s an adult, but he’s still my youngest, so as we celebrated his birthday with a game of bowling (not that “Wii” stuff), I reflected on his early years. Here are a few of his favorite sayings. “Guess I’m just not lucky.” “Yeah, you white.” “Tanks!” Translations: “Why can’t I have that cookie?” “Yeah, you’re right.” “Thanks!” “Tanks!” is perhaps my favorite. At that age he appeared so excited and appreciative. He still says thanks but not with the same energy. But who of us does? Giving “Tanks!” doesn’t rate high in the socially-networked world where everyone is texting — sometimes to the person sitting next to them — but few appear truly engaged. Perhaps that’s why I treasure these “thank you” cards sitting by desk. Most came from writers I met at conferences: words of appreciating from authors with devotions, books and novel ideas. I am very pleased to have as my special guest Lorenzo White who has transitioned from a stellar career as a collegiate and NFL running back to running a very worthwhile foundation to help kids grow to adulthood with integrity an a future through sports. Lorenzo enjoys his new life by giving back to others. Lorenzo is the most accomplished running back in the rich history of Michigan State Football. Ranking first in the school record books in rushing yards (4,887), rushing attempts (1,082), rushing touchdowns (43) and 100-yard games (23). The two-time All American (1985,1987) finished fourth in the Heisman Trophy balloting in both of those seasons. His 4,887 rushing yards ranked second in Big Ten history, following his departure from East Lansing and still ranks fifth in all time league history. Lorenzo was inducted into the Michigan State Athletics Hall of Fame and he was also selected to play in the Pro Bowl in 2010. In 8 NFL seasons from 1988 to 1995, Lorenzo rushed for 4,249 yards with 30 touchdowns, averaging 4.0 yards per carry. Lorenzo created The Lorenzo White Foundation to support organizations that champion the needs of children, their families and the community. Lorenzo is dedicated to getting kids off the streets, providing a wholesome learning environment and giving them tools for a life of meaning. The Vertically Striped Academy of Arts, Sciences, and Other Neato Stuff held center stage as Episode 117 was used to unveil the winners of the 3rd annual Sockie Awards. Craig was flying solo all show, so todays show was kind of like leftover day for the show...All the audio clips that had been sitting on the shelf for months or more were thrown into the mix to keep Craig from losing both his voice and his sanity. Included in the mix, we helped Jim from Taxi pass his drivers test, Craig apologized for a giant mis-step on the Magnificent Seven television theme songs, we played the Duck song, and we heard the official anthem of summer. Craig also took a little time to wonder why Denver is turning into Seattle as well as reminisce about his experiences at camp and also unveiled the troubling source of the official Royal Family Kids Camp theme song. Dr. Emery Petchauer is an Assistant Professor of Teacher Education at Lincoln University. He has conducted research internationally in Oxford, England and Sao Paulo, Brazil. His research focuses on the cultural dimensions of teaching and learning, particularly in urban settings. Dr. Petchauer has received teaching awards in both secondary and higher education levels, and he is the author of Hip-Hop Culture in College Students Lives: Elements, Embodiment, and Higher Edutainment (Routledge Press), the first scholarly study of hip-hop on college campuses Dr. Emery Petchauer is a friend who has not been silent on this issue.
